We only meant to pop into Migros for a moment.
Really, just for a moment.
I even said, «We only need bread.»
She said, «And maybe milk.»
And now here we are.
With five shopping bags.
Two in my hands. Three in hers. And every one of them is full.
«This is so typical,» I said. «We go in for bread and come out carrying half the region.»
She looked in her bag.
«Not half the region,» she said. «More like the whole thing.»
There was bread from the in-store bakery. Freshly baked sourdough bread. Vegetables from a field not far away. Yogurt made with milk from the region. Cheese, eggs, fruit, and a few other things that had simply jumped into the basket.
At least that's what we claim.
I lifted my bag a little.
«Quite heavy, this region.»
She nodded.
«But somehow, it’s quite nice too.»
Because suddenly, our shopping was no longer just shopping. Each bag held a little piece of this place. Of farms, family businesses, and people who work in the region and make their products with care.
«From the region. For the region,» I read on one of the products.

I thought about it for a moment.
«So that means the products come from here and stay here?»
«Something like that,» she said. «And now we'll take them home.»
I looked at our five full bags.
«Then we’re supporting the region very thoroughly today.»
She laughed.
«Yes. And tomorrow we’ll eat very locally.»
So we continued through Lucerne. Slowly, because the bags were heavy. But also feeling a little proud.
Because sometimes you only realise what you have actually bought when you carry it home.
Not just bread.
Not just milk.
But closeness.
Freshness.
And a comforting sense of home.

The Intermission

It was a special evening, our first visit together to the Lucerne Theatre. As we stepped outside into the cool night air during the intermission, he held the door for me. «After you,» he said gallantly.
«Thank you,» I replied, taking a deep breath. «Okay, that alone was worth it.»
«The intermission?» he teased.
«The fresh air. And the gentleman routine.»
«I knew I should have come prepared for some heat,» he grinned.

I glanced at him sideways. «So, our first play together... quite a risky move, don’t you think?»
«Why’s that?» he asked.
«You find out immediately if someone tends to laugh or cry during an existential crisis.»
«And? What’s the verdict so far?» he wanted to know.
I had to smirk. «That you smile at the most unexpected moments.»
«You were watching me!» he exclaimed, as if caught out.
«Purely for scientific purposes, of course,» I defended myself.
«Of course.»

I thought for a moment about the performance. «There was this one moment during the performance where I thought: Oh no.»
«Oh no is rarely a good sign,» he interjected.
«It was a good oh no. As in: Oh no, he actually gets it.»
«You mean I understood the scene?» he followed up.
I looked him straight in the eyes. «I mean more like: Oh no, he understands me.»
He paused for a second. «Do you mean the actor or me?»
«Who knows?» I replied mysteriously. «The audience as the secret lead role...»
Then I asked: «And what kind of role would you be playing?»
«The guy who always thinks he’s got a better idea,» he answered without hesitation.
«Naturally.»
«How about you?»
«Hm… maybe that one who speaks her mind? Or starts a revolution.» He looked at me intensely. «That is pretty attractive.»
«Well, that wasn’t very subtle,» I noted.
«I’m still a work in progress,» he shot back.
He glanced around. «That guy could easily be part of the play.»
«Or we could,» I suggested.
«Oh God.»
«What?»
«What if someone is watching us right now thinking: Ah, look, a first date?» he pondered.
«Oh, then I hope we’re well cast.»

I became a bit more serious. «That monologue earlier reminded me of something.»
«A good something or a bad one?» he asked softly.
«A moment where I stayed silent when I should have spoken up.»
«And now?» he wanted to know.
«Now I think maybe I shouldn’t let those moments repeat themselves.»
He didn’t hesitate. «In that case I’ll say something.»
«Please.»
«I’m really glad we’re here together tonight.»
In that moment, the intermission bell rang.
«Already?» I blurted out.
He smiled at me as we slowly turned back toward the entrance. «Tell me, what’s happening between us right now... isn’t that also...?»
«Yes. Theater,» I finished his thought.

Where is the stag?

I am the big, little stag in the shop window.
Not just any. The StadtHirsch — the city stag with antlers.

I used to stand in the forest. Among fir trees, moss, and very many opinions about mushrooms. It was quiet there. Very quiet. You could hear the wind, the birds, and occasionally a hunter who thought he was being quiet.
He wasn't.

At some point I wanted to see more. So I ran off. For a stag, the way to Lucerne is far. For a little plastic stag, it’s very far.
I followed no trail, but a rumor.

In Lucerne, rumor had it, there was a place for a Star Hirsch. A place where one would be seen. That sounded good.

Then I arrived here. At Hirschengraben. I liked the name immediately.

There were already other little deer in the shop window. Very tiny ones. And two hunters in the back. I was startled for a moment. But they didn’t want anything from me. What would they want with a little dead plastic stag? No, these hunters are looking after us.

They make sure we're standing correctly. That no one falls over. That we look good. And if someone stops outside, they smile a little, as if they had been waiting for exactly that.

Then I saw the sign.
StadtHirsch.
I blinked.
«Wait,» I said. «I thought I was looking for the Star Hirsch.»
StadtHirsch. Star Hirsch. City stag. Star stag.
I quietly repeated the words to myself a few times.
Then I started wondering.

Does a Star Hirsch only come out at night?
If so: No thank you.
Then I’d rather be a StadtHirsch.
